Three teenagers in Virginia are credited by local officials with rescuing people after their kayaks capsized near a lake, and then securing places on their high school golf team.

According to a statement from the local police department, Andrew Tuggle, 15, along with 17-year-old Gavin Cain and 17-year-old Jackson Castro went to the Culpeper Country Club on 27 July to try out for Eastern View High School’s golf team. During the tryouts, the teens heard screams from the nearby lake. Authorities say the trio jumped into the water to help three people, including a preschooler who could not swim, after their kayaks overturned.

After the rescue, the teens reportedly continued with the tryout process and are said to have earned spots on the squad. Officials describe the incident as demonstrating leadership and have called the actions “heroic.” The available reports do not provide further details on the condition of the rescued individuals or the investigation into the cause of the capsizing.
