The University Grants Commission (UGC) has identified 32 universities operating as “fake” institutions in India, and it is warning students to avoid enrolment and degree programmes that are not legally recognised. The UGC cautions that some EdTech programmes may be functioning through unauthorised franchise or association arrangements, which can lead students to courses or degrees that lack proper recognition.
In its communication to the government, the Centre also advises prospective students to verify the recognition status of any university before admission. Verification can be done using the UGC website, where recognised institutions are listed. The warnings emphasise that degrees awarded by unrecognised or unauthorised entities are not legally recognised under the relevant regulatory framework.
The issue is presented as part of the government’s efforts to protect students from fraudulent higher-education providers and from improper academic collaborations involving EdTech companies. The UGC’s stance is that students should confirm legitimacy through official UGC channels before paying fees or enrolling.
