The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has announced plans to station its operatives in all 30 local government areas of Osun State during the August 15 governorship poll.Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner for Osun State, Yusuf Olatunji, disclosed this on Thursday while addressing journalists at a street rally in Osogbo against vote-buying. The rally, which began at Igbona Market and moved through Old Garage to Olaiya Area before ending at Alekuwodo Market, featured corps members, INEC staff, and ICPC officials.Speakers delivered messages in Nigeria’s three major languages, warning residents against selling their votes. Fliers highlighting the dangers of vote-buying were also distributed.Olatunji stressed that vote trading is a crime under Nigerian law and vowed that offenders whether buyers or sellers would be arrested and prosecuted. “Vote buying and vote selling may appear to offer temporary financial relief, but they inflict lasting damage on our democracy,” he said, warning that poor governance and unfulfilled promises are the inevitable consequences.He urged voters to protect the integrity of the electoral process by rejecting inducements, emphasizing that the short-term gains of vote selling cannot outweigh the long-term impact of electing the wrong leaders.The PUNCH reports that 14 political parties are fielding candidates in the election, including incumbent governor Ademola Adeleke, who is seeking reelection on the platform of the Accord Party.
