The leadership tussle in the Adamawa State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has intensified, with rival factions openly challenging each other following the suspension of state chairman Jonah Theman Kalpenge.Reports of Kalpenge’s suspension surfaced on Wednesday, August 5, but by Thursday, executives loyal to him dismissed the move as unconstitutional and invalid.At a meeting in Yola attended by state and local government leaders, party executives described the suspension as “drama and child’s play,” insisting it violated the party’s constitution. They announced the formation of a five-member disciplinary committee to probe those behind the “unlawful” meeting that produced the suspension.The committee, chaired by Dauda Peter with members Yahuza Kabiru, Hauwa Musa, Sarah Sunday, and Moses Gaji, has summoned Kamalludeen Jibrilla Aliyu, Suleiman Abdulkareem, Andrew Adamu, Abubakar Aliyu, and Tufanus Daniel to appear before it at the state secretariat in Yola on Saturday, August 8.This latest crisis comes as the party prepares for the 2027 governorship election, where Senator Ishaku Abbo is its candidate. The turmoil mirrors the internal divisions that weakened the LP ahead of the 2023 general election, raising concerns about its stability in Adamawa.
