Bombay High Court orders Meta to remove fake Delta Corp accounts and AI deepfake video

Mumbai, August 7, 2026: The Bombay High Court on Thursday directed Meta Platforms Inc. to immediately remove fake social media accounts impersonating hospitality and gaming company Delta Corp Ltd and an AI-generated deepfake video falsely linking the company to online gaming.Justice Abhay Ahuja passed the interim order while hearing Delta Corp’s suit challenging Meta’s decision to suspend its official Facebook and Instagram accounts. The company has argued that the suspension was carried out without prior notice and without giving any valid reason.Delta Challenges Suspension Of Official AccountsDuring the hearing, Delta Corp’s counsel opposed Meta’s request for more time to file its reply. He told the court that although the company had approached Meta after its accounts were suspended on April 10, it had received “six different contradictory reasons” for the action. He argued that the case raised serious concerns about the “accountability and transparency” of a digital intermediary.He also submitted that while Meta had acted swiftly in disabling Delta’s official accounts, it had failed to remove fake pages impersonating the company despite repeated complaints.According to Delta, the fake accounts falsely claimed that the company and its promoter were involved in online gambling. The company maintained that it operates only licensed physical casinos and has no involvement in online gaming.Court Examines AI-Generated VideoThe court was also shown an AI-generated video allegedly circulated through a fake account called “Deltin Vibe”. The video appeared to show Delta chairman Jaydev Mody announcing the launch of an online casino and gaming application. It also featured well-known sports personalities, film celebrities, and industrialists.After watching the video, Justice Ahuja observed that although it had been described as a deepfake, “it appeared to be a real one,” adding that this reflected how advanced technology had become, where “even a deepfake/impersonation looks real.”The judge further observed that Meta was best placed to determine whether the video was fake as it was being circulated on the company’s platform.Meta Ordered To Remove Fake AccountsMeta’s counsel sought time until August 17 to file a reply but submitted that if directed by the court, the company was “duty bound” to remove unauthorised impersonation accounts.Also Watch: Bombay HC Permits Union Minister Nitin Gadkari To Sue Meta, X, Google Over Alleged AI-Generated Deepfake ContentGranting interim relief, the court directed Meta to remove the fake accounts listed by Delta and the AI-generated video referred to in the company’s August 5 communication.
