The average cost of preparing a home-cooked vegetarian thali in July rises to its highest level in seven months, according to a Crisil Intelligence report, with food inflation pressures concentrated in a few key inputs. The vegetarian thali is reported at ₹29.1 in July, up from ₹28.4 in June (about a 2% monthly increase) and at roughly the same level last seen in December 2025. On a year-on-year basis, it is around 4% higher than July 2025.

Rising onion prices are identified as the main contributor: onions increase by about 23% month-on-month in July, while potato prices rise 4% during the same period. Some offsetting factors are noted, including a 1% decline in tomato prices month-on-month and broadly stable prices for other ingredients. However, these declines are not enough to counter the onion-led jump. The report also links cost pressure to higher edible oil prices (up 11% year-on-year) and higher LPG cylinder prices (up 10%), citing supply disruptions and higher energy costs.

For non-vegetarian thalis, July pricing is described as unchanged month-on-month at ₹58.3, but about 9% higher than a year earlier, attributed to higher broiler chicken prices. Potato and tomato price declines help moderate the overall increases.
