The Accord Party calls for the immediate resignation of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Chairman Ola Olukoyede after the EFCC freezes Osun State Government bank accounts. According to reports, the party makes the demand in connection with the controversy over the freeze and links it to public confidence in the anti-graft agency.
Accord leaders say President Bola Tinubu’s decision to direct the EFCC to reverse the account freeze is timely. They nonetheless argue that Olukoyede’s leadership has damaged trust in the EFCC and has created embarrassment for the president. The party also says it views the EFCC’s actions as potentially partisan, particularly with an Osun governorship election scheduled for August 15.
The reports also note that the EFCC defended the freeze by citing its legal authority to restrict accounts suspected of financial crimes for up to 72 hours without a court order. In addition, the Accord Party urges security agencies and election institutions such as INEC to remain impartial during the election and calls for the release of detained party members, while urging Osun residents to vote and ensure votes are counted.
