Roadside Attractions and Vertical have acquired U.S. distribution rights to “The Gallerist,” a Miami-set satire of the art world starring Natalie Portman and Jenna Ortega. Both outlets report that the film, directed by Cathy Yan, is an absurdist dark comedy/thriller that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. “The Gallerist” is scheduled to open in U.S. theaters on Dec. 4, nearly a year after its Sundance premiere.
The cast centers on Portman in the lead role, with Jenna Ortega also starring. The films’ premise targets the art-world ecosystem through satire, with the tone described as comedic and dark, blending thriller elements with humor. One outlet also notes the production comes from MRC and that it reteams Ortega with a cast connection from her “Wednesday” series, highlighting continuity in her acting collaborations.
Overall, the deal brings the previously premiered festival title to a wide U.S. theatrical release, with the two distributors jointly handling the rollout.
