NASA has carried out a power-reduction operation on the Voyager 2 spacecraft to keep it running for at least another year. The 1977 probe is far from the Sun and relies on a radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG) that converts heat from plutonium decay into electricity. NASA says power margins have become very small as the available heat-and-electricity output continues to decline.
Officials report that engineers reduce energy use by turning off nonessential systems and switching some functions to lower-power alternatives while maintaining thermal control and support for the remaining mission activities. Space.com and Slashdot both describe the change as occurring in interstellar space and as managed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
Both outlets also note that the declining power already affects science operations. Since 2024, both Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 have turned off some instruments for power reasons, and each spacecraft is operating with fewer science instruments than at launch. NASA indicates Voyager 1 is expected to receive similar power-saving adjustments in the coming months, with the aim of sustaining the last instruments for additional time.
