A new YouGov poll of Europeans on holiday behavior finds that stereotypes about who “hog” sunloungers at beaches do not match reported tendencies. While Germans and Britons are often linked with the habit of claiming spots early in the day, the data suggests the pattern is less common across other nationalities.

According to the poll, Germans (51%) and Britons (46%) are most likely to be associated with waking up early to reserve sun loungers. However, that perception appears weak in most other countries, where only about 5% to 17% of respondents share the stereotype. The outlet reports that Italians and French holidaymakers are more likely than Germans or Britons to be linked with using towels to stake a claim to a sun lounger.

The differing angles reflect how outlets frame the same results: one emphasizes the persistence of the stereotype and how narrowly it exists by country, while the other highlights which nationalities are most associated with specific reserving behaviors, such as towel use. Overall, the poll points to a mismatch between popular assumptions and cross-country responses.
