BMW and Clemson University develop and test a solar-powered electric-vehicle prototype designed to generate more energy in a day than it consumes during urban commuting. The project, originally launched as a challenge to graduate students, is presented as a working vehicle rather than a concept.
The prototype, called Deep Orange 17 (marketed by BMW as the Luminetta), is a two-seat EV fitted with more than 1,700 photovoltaic cells that cover the vehicle. BMW’s materials describe the effort as going beyond typical roof-panel designs, aiming to maximize solar capture to meet the “net-positive” energy requirement for a day of city driving.
