Director Farhan Akhtar discusses the 25-year legacy of Dil Chahta Hai and recalls a period when Saif Ali Khan nearly left the film because of a date clash. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, he describes being “devastated” by the situation, saying only Saif could have played a particular role. While recounting how the problem emerged about a month before filming, he jokes that such circumstances “seem to be a pattern nowadays.”
Several outlets interpret the comment as a subtle reference to ongoing casting and scheduling controversy around Don 3, in which Ranveer Singh reportedly exited the project before production moved forward. Farhan does not name Ranveer, but broadcaster Anupama Chopra is shown reacting with laughter as he continues speaking, adding that such situations can happen “not just with me.”
The broader dispute centers on financial disagreements connected to Ranveer Singh’s departure from Don 3. Times of India reports that FWICE initially issued a non-cooperation directive after a complaint, including claims of losses, but later clarified that Ranveer was not banned and that the directive was withdrawn. As of now, the Don 3 production dispute remains unresolved, with the franchise’s announcements having included Ranveer and Kiara Advani following the prior films starring Shah Rukh Khan.
