Soldiers assume security at Osun INEC office ahead of governorship election

Armed military personnel have taken over security duties at the Osun State headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osogbo ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.The development was observed on Monday as security preparations intensified across the state for the August 15 poll. Fully armed soldiers were stationed in front of the INEC office, with about three Armoured Personnel Carriers also deployed to reinforce security in the area.Before the military takeover, anti-riot mobile policemen and operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) had been primarily responsible for securing the premises.A security source close to the office said the soldiers arrived in Osogbo on Sunday and formally assumed security duties on Monday morning. Their numbers increased during the day.“They arrived yesterday (Sunday), but their numbers increased today (Monday). The soldiers are in charge now, but all other security personnel are at their duty posts too.“In the next few days, the police and Civil Defence personnel will join. There are three Armoured Personnel Carriers brought by the soldiers too,” the source said.The heightened military presence forms part of broader security arrangements by election authorities and security agencies in preparation for the governorship election.
