Coal India is evaluating a potential acquisition of Canada-based Wealth Minerals’ Chile-focused unit to gain access to lithium assets in Chile, Reuters reports. The move, if it proceeds, would represent one of India’s larger efforts to secure overseas lithium supplies for electric vehicle batteries and other clean-energy uses.

As an initial step, Coal India and Wealth Minerals’ Chilean subsidiary, Kuska Minerals, have jointly applied for a lithium extraction licence from the Chilean government. Sources say any acquisition decision would be made only after the licence is granted. Reuters also notes Coal India could explore a joint venture instead of or alongside an acquisition, though terms are not finalised.

The licence application process has faced delays because of a change in Chile’s government. Wealth Minerals is reported to have two other lithium projects in Chile. The reports frame the potential Chile entry within India’s broader critical-minerals push to reduce reliance on supply chains concentrated in China, after earlier progress on lithium ventures such as Argentina in 2024.
