A study published in Nature finds that both sleep quantity and sleep regularity are associated with how quickly people biologically age across multiple organs. Using data from about half a million participants in the UK Biobank, researchers led by Junhao Wen analyze 23 “aging clocks” designed to estimate biological aging in different body systems and compare these measures with self-reported sleep patterns. The findings show a “U-shaped” relationship between sleep duration and biological aging: people who sleep less than six hours or more than eight hours per night generally show faster aging on average. The lowest estimated aging rates appear among those sleeping roughly between 6.4 and 7.8 hours, though the optimal range varies by organ and sex. The research also reports that disturbed sleep is linked with higher risk of multiple conditions, with short sleep associated with disorders including depression and anxiety, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, ischemic heart disease, and heart arrhythmias, and both short and long sleep associated with diseases such as COPD, asthma, and some gastrointestinal problems. The study does not prove that sleep duration directly causes aging, but it concludes that sleep may be a marker of emerging health issues and could be relevant to healthy aging.
