Iran says there has been no progress in talks to revive an interim peace deal with the United States, according to a senior Iranian source. The source says discussions include efforts to return to the June agreement and define a timeframe for implementing it, but negotiations have not moved forward.
The comments follow renewed concern over security in the region, including attacks on shipping that push oil prices higher. The June interim deal called for an immediate and permanent termination of military operations across fronts. However, it unravels quickly: the U.S. president says it is “over” on July 7, and Iran’s foreign ministry later says the deal is “suspended.”
Outlets also note the dispute over compliance. The U.S. says Iran failed to honor commitments under the deal connected to reopening the Strait of Hormuz for shipping. Iran counters that Washington reneged on its obligations, including lifting restrictions on Iranian ports and releasing frozen Iranian assets. Both sides’ positions remain sharply opposed as mediators facilitate renewed discussions.
