The United States establishes an inter-agency task force to combat “birth tourism,” aimed at preventing foreign nationals from travelling to give birth in the US primarily to obtain American citizenship for their children. The Department of State announces the new Birth Tourism Prevention Task Force, alongside related enforcement actions.
The move is presented as part of a broader effort to protect the integrity of US citizenship and ensure non-immigrant visas are used for their intended purposes. According to a US State Department fact sheet, the department works with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and says it is using “all available tools” in response to the issue.
Both outlets report that the US revokes more than 600 visas worldwide as part of this crackdown. The South China Morning Post adds context that the announcement follows the US Supreme Court’s rejection of an attempt by President Donald Trump to restrict constitutional birthright citizenship, making the task force one of the administration’s tools to address the practice within existing legal limits.
