President Tinubu urges INEC and security chiefs for a peaceful, transparent Osun governorship election on August 15, 2026, as 15 candidates compete for office.

President Bola Tinubu has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to guarantee a peaceful, transparent, and credible governorship election in Osun State scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026.In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu emphasized that the poll must reflect the will of the people. He urged INEC to use the exercise as a test of its readiness for the 2027 general elections.“As the people of Osun State head to the polling units to elect who will govern them in the next four years, I call on INEC to ensure orderly conduct of the election. The election must be transparent, free and fair. I urge INEC to ensure the integrity of the process,” Tinubu said.The President also directed the Inspector-General of Police and other security chiefs to provide maximum protection for voters and electoral officials, warning that no room should be given to troublemakers.“Electoral officials and voters must be protected so they can perform their civic duties without fear or intimidation,” he added, encouraging residents to turn out in large numbers to vote peacefully.Fifteen candidates are contesting the governorship seat, including incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party, APC candidate Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, and ADC candidate Najeem Salaam.Tinubu stressed that the credibility of the election would depend on whether its outcome accurately reflects the choice of Osun voters.
