In a written reply provided to former Hong Kong governor Chris Patten, Migration and Citizenship Minister Jo White says the case does not warrant deportation despite complications during Wu’s attempt to settle in the country.
Both outlets report that the issue arises from “entry hiccups” tied to Wu’s travel to the UK using a British National (Overseas), or BNO, passport. The minister’s letter also addresses how overseas convictions are treated in immigration decisions, indicating that such convictions should not automatically lead to refusing settlement applications.
