The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports that India’s Green India Mission fails to achieve nearly 98% of its forest cover targets over about a decade. The audit says the mission’s objective of expanding forest cover is not met, with results falling far below planned goals.
The CAG points to shortcomings that include lapses in planning and problems in financial oversight. It also flags that afforestation efforts neglect vulnerable areas, which the report says reduces the effectiveness of the program in supporting climate-related aims. The audit also highlights that the mission’s execution is not well aligned with existing state and central schemes, affecting how resources and activities are carried out.
