Mumbai’s civic improvements committee approves a 30-year lease of Century Mill land in Lower Parel to Peddar Realty Ltd, with an option to extend it for another 30 years. The decision covers about 23,822 sq m (and related reporting cites nearly 9,000 sq m of BMC land being included in an SRA-linked plan).
The proposal faces opposition in the BMC, with Congress leaders and Shiv Sena (UBT) corporators questioning why the reclaimed municipal asset is being leased to a private developer for potentially up to six decades. They also raise concerns about valuation, transparency, and whether adequate protections and rehabilitation for mill workers and local residents are built into the terms. Congress leader Ashraf Azmi demands independent valuation and safeguards around the roughly Rs 1,351-crore consideration and deferred payments.
Committee chairperson Sandhya Doshi and other BMC supporters defend the lease as a way to generate revenue while providing homes or space for mill workers, including rehabilitation flats. The land’s ownership dispute is also part of the context, with reporting noting the Supreme Court rules in BMC’s favour in January 2025, clearing the way for redevelopment. In the same meeting, the committee also clears a separate change replacing a reserved sports complex/stadium in Mulund East with a petrol pump, and approves merging Lower Parel land with an SRA project for rehabilitation flats and a land premium.
