Parts of Metro Cebu face rotational brownouts as the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) issues grid alerts over a power supply shortage in the Visayas. NGCP places the Visayas grid under red alert from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15, after reporting limited available capacity.
NGCP says available capacity is about 2,350 megawatts, while peak demand could reach 2,475 megawatts. It attributes the shortfall to the unavailability of large coal-fired power plants in the Visayas, TVI 1 and TVI 2, alongside increases in forecast system demand. On Friday, Aug. 14, NGCP previously placed the Visayas grid under yellow and red alerts, prompting scheduled rotational outages in multiple areas of Metro Cebu.
Visayan Electric communicates the operational impact by publishing and updating which barangays and cities may be affected and the timing of outages, typically with schedules running from early afternoon into the evening. The utility notes that the actual coverage and timing may still change depending on NGCP’s latest demand-reduction requirement.
