India raises concerns at the United Nations about attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, saying such actions endanger civilian crews and disrupt freedom of navigation. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, makes the comments at a special meeting of the UN Economic and Social Council (UNECOSOC) focused on safeguarding energy and supply flows.
Harish calls targeting commercial shipping “unacceptable” and emphasizes that the international law governing safe passage through maritime routes must be fully respected. The remarks come days after an India-flagged commercial vessel is attacked off the coast of Oman. According to reporting cited by multiple outlets, Omani authorities rescue all 14 crew members of the ship, which had been sailing from Somalia, while it is not immediately clear who carried out the strike.
At the UNECOSOC meeting, Harish also highlights India’s view on how to respond to a recent energy and fertiliser crisis linked to the conflict in West Asia, saying both short-term and structural measures, alongside international cooperation, are necessary to address the impact.
