The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Improvement Committee approves a proposal to lease about 15 acres at the Mulund dumping ground for the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) for five years. The land is intended for industrial facilities supporting the project, including a casting yard, precast manufacturing unit, and a ready-mix concrete (RMC) plant.
The panel’s decision comes with opposition from Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress corporators, who question aspects of the process. One reported concern is that open tendering is not followed, raising claims of favoritism. A BJP corporator backs the lease, saying it follows proper process and is meant to benefit Dharavi residents through redevelopment. The BMC chairperson says members are given a chance to present their views before the proposal is sanctioned.
Under the plan, about 60,703 sq m is leased to Navbharat Mega Developers Pvt Ltd. The site, where biomining is underway, contains legacy waste estimated at 2.5–3 lakh metric tonnes, which is to be removed before handover. The BMC sets rent at Rs 252 per sq m per month with a 6% annual increase, projecting total revenue of Rs 103.47 crore over five years. The developer will undertake remediation and receive rent adjustments, and the land is handed over on an “as is where is” basis with safety and regulatory conditions.
