The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announces additional metro services aimed at encouraging more people to shift from private vehicles to public transport across Delhi-NCR. The DMRC says it will run 24 extra train trips every Monday starting May 18, using six additional trains. It also indicates that similar arrangements may be introduced on other days depending on passenger demand.
The corporation frames the step as part of efforts to strengthen mass transit and improve urban mobility, particularly in the context of growing emphasis on energy security, environmental sustainability, and reduced dependence on petroleum-based transport. DMRC also says the additional trips are intended to handle a possible rise in passenger footfall and to support smooth, uninterrupted operations during peak travel periods.
Some reports note the action follows government pressure to reduce private vehicle use, including calls to observe “Metro Mondays” and use public transport to conserve fuel, attributed to Delhi’s Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
