China Evergrande Group’s liquidators are taking their claims against PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to the Hong Kong High Court, with an opening hearing scheduled for Monday. Court records show the case is due to be heard for one day before Deputy Judge Patrick Fung Pak-tung and is listed as open to the public.
The liquidators are seeking 57 billion yuan (about US$8.4 billion) from PwC entities, according to multiple outlets. The claims are directed at PwC International and also involve PwC Hong Kong and PwC China, with the liquidators arguing that PwC’s global coordinating arm took on responsibility for auditing work related to Evergrande’s accounting issues after the developer’s collapse.
The matter is framed as a test of how far liquidators can pursue claims against auditors of insolvent companies, particularly regarding the extent and scope of responsibility across different PwC entities. The hearing concerns the start of the case; the outlets did not report on any rulings or outcomes from Monday’s proceedings.
