Osogbo voters unable to vote as names allegedly disappear from register in Osun election

Several voters in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, were unable to cast their ballots in Saturday’s governorship election after discovering that their names were missing from the voters’ register, despite having voted at the same polling units in past elections.At Polling Unit 017, Olaniyi Kafayah and at least five others reported that their names could not be found, raising suspicions of voter suppression. Some elderly voters also faced similar challenges, remaining at the polling unit since morning without success.The complaints add to wider concerns over accreditation difficulties across the state, largely linked to malfunctions of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS). Deputy Governor Kola Adewusi criticised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after BVAS machines at his polling unit developed faults, slowing down the process.“Election was going well until the BVAS started malfunctioning and started giving issues, leaving many persons not voting,” Adewusi said, expressing frustration over failed attempts to reach INEC officials. He warned that persistent BVAS problems could deny many voters their constitutional right to vote.The situation has heightened tensions in Osun, with calls for urgent intervention to ensure eligible voters are not disenfranchised.
