The Imo State Government bans street trading, hawking, and illegal roadside structures on major roads in Owerri, as well as the loading and offloading of goods along those routes. The directive applies to roads including Rotobi, Royce, and Douglas, described as central roads in the state capital.
The order, issued in a joint press statement by officials from the Owerri Capital Development Authority and the governor’s monitoring and compliance office, says the activities cause traffic obstruction and can lead to accidents. The government directs traders and business operators to use designated market locations within Owerri Municipal, naming Eke Ukwu Owerri Market, Relief Market, Cluster International Market, and Egbeada International Market.
Outlets report the directive also restricts heavy-duty trucks, lorries, and other vehicles from using the affected roads as loading, unloading, or offloading points. The statement warns that continued violations can trigger enforcement actions, including arrest, prosecution, fines, confiscation of items, and removal or demolition of illegal structures.
