The declaration comes more than a month after Peru’s first-round election, after the vote count concluded and the candidates’ positions were verified by the national election board. Keiko Fujimori, the daughter of late former President Alberto Fujimori, advances to the runoff for a fourth time as she seeks the presidency with a pro-business conservative platform.
Sánchez’s place in the runoff is confirmed by the election board on May 17, following his first-round performance, when he secures more than 2 million votes. Coverage also notes that his candidacy remains disputed: Peruvian prosecutors and an ultraconservative contender, Rafael López Aliaga, raise allegations of financial wrongdoing against Sánchez. López Aliaga, who finished third in the first round, says he will not recognize the election outcome.
