Delhi auto-rickshaw drivers’ unions announce a protest at Jantar Mantar on August 17, demanding the Delhi government set up an “Auto-Taxi Drivers’ Welfare Board” and withdraw increased vehicle fitness fees.

According to the unions, the fitness test fee hike applies to motor vehicles older than 20 years, introduced by the Transport Ministry in November 2025 to discourage older vehicles. The organisers also say they are seeking additional measures related to transport regulation. Free Press Journal reports the protest demands working time limits for drivers, accountability for officials of the Delhi transport department, and an immediate ban on bike taxis with private number plates. The Hindu focuses on the core demands of constituting the welfare board and reversing the higher fitness fees. Both outlets present the protest as an effort by the Delhi Auto Rickshaw Sangh, led by general secretary Rajendra Soni, to press the government on these issues.
