Ramayana costume designers Rimple and Harpreet Narula respond to online criticism about what some viewers call “modernized” costumes for Sai Pallavi’s Sita and Lara Dutta’s Kaikeyi, including comparisons to television soap aesthetics. In interviews, the designers say their choices stem from a broader creative process rather than copying existing styles.
The team says they designed the costumes to be instantly recognizable as part of an Indian epic for international audiences. They describe working cohesively with director Nitesh Tiwari, exploring multiple options before settling on the final look for Sita. For Kaikeyi, Rimple says the outfit’s elements reflect the character’s emotional state and context in the story: a green blouse is meant to symbolize Mother Earth, paired with a darker maroon/oxblood saree to convey Kaikeyi’s complexity during her banishment of Ram. Both sources also note the designers used vegetable and natural dyes.
Harpreet Narula adds that the team consciously prioritizes “faith over authenticity,” drawing on how Indians view and worship Ram and Sita through calendars, temples, and earlier artwork, including differing regional interpretations of iconography. Ramayana: Part 1 is set for Diwali 2026, with Part 2 following in Diwali 2027.
