Granite stones fall from an under-construction area at the Medetiya Nagar Metro station site on Mumbai Metro Line 9, prompting an MMRDA action and penalties for safety lapses. The incident occurs when a crane-operated material basket during debris removal and material-shifting work comes into contact with granite stones stored near the foot-over bridge (FOB) area, causing stones to drop into the barricaded construction zone. No injuries are reported.
MMRDA imposes a cumulative penalty of ₹12.5 crore on the contractor and associated consultants. The contractor, J. Kumar Infraprojects Ltd, is fined ₹10 crore, while other parties face additional charges, including ₹1.5 crore for Gajanan and ₹1 crore for the Systra-CEG-General Consultant team, according to one report. MMRDA also clarifies that stones do not directly hit a school bus or van and that no students were present in the vehicle; a separate vehicle later runs over scattered pieces, resulting in punctured tyres. Times of India adds that the action is notably higher than typical penalties linked to the contractor’s prior project issues.
