Apple is expanding support for digital driver’s licenses and state IDs in Apple Wallet to four additional U.S. states, according to reports citing Apple code and state DMV information. In supported regions, people can add a license or ID to the Wallet app on iPhone and Apple Watch, then use it to display proof of identity or age at select airports, businesses, and in certain apps.
MacRumors and Engadget both point to North Carolina as the latest confirmation, with the North Carolina DMV saying a new mobile ID program will launch through a “NC Wallet” app in December. Apple Wallet support is expected to follow “in early 2027,” alongside other major wallet platforms. MacRumors additionally reports that code evidence indicates Apple Wallet IDs are coming to Oklahoma, Utah, and Virginia, though timelines for those states are not provided.
The coverage also notes practical limitations: Apple Wallet mobile IDs may not yet be accepted by all law enforcement agencies and businesses, so physical IDs are still recommended as a backup. Separately, TSA acceptance is described as available at checkpoints in more than 250 U.S. airports for domestic travel, with TSA signage used to confirm availability at specific locations. North Carolina’s DMV says the feature will include Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Raleigh-Durham International Airport.
