The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it has started an investigation into Haruna Yusuf after Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) officers intercepted undeclared foreign currencies at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport.
EFCC and NCS officials say the seizures occurred during routine screening of arriving passengers between August 8 and 12. Reported amounts include $73,000, £15,957 and 827,800 Saudi Riyals. One case involved an unaccompanied Saudi Air luggage containing 827,800 Saudi Riyals and $53,300 concealed in footwear. Four days later, officers intercepted Yusuf’s luggage on an Ethiopian Airlines flight and secondary screening allegedly found $20,000 and £15,957 concealed inside sports shoes. After the NCS recovered the currencies, it handed the suspect and exhibits to the EFCC for further action.
Both outlets describe the EFCC’s inquiry as tied to alleged failure to declare large sums of currency and potential violation of Nigeria’s money laundering (prevention and prohibition) framework. They also echo that travellers are expected to comply with currency declaration requirements and that the EFCC will conduct a thorough investigation and pursue legal action where warranted.
