The UK’s British High Commission commends voters and stakeholders for the generally peaceful conduct of Nigeria’s Osun State governorship election. It also congratulates Ademola Adeleke on his re-election as governor, and says its assessment aligns with findings from credible independent observer groups.

In its statement, the High Commission says it met with stakeholders ahead of election day and deployed an accredited observation team. It highlights “encouraging signs” including polls opening on schedule in many locations, security personnel maintaining order, and INEC officials implementing electoral procedures effectively. It also points to voter patience, resilience, and participation throughout the day.

While the commission largely emphasizes positive aspects, it also notes reports of issues that generated tension before and during the process. These include alleged voter interference, vote-buying across party lines, limited access for people with disabilities and elderly voters, and overcrowding linked to the speed of accreditation and limited availability of BVAS devices. The High Commission urges relevant institutions to review these concerns and apply lessons to strengthen integrity, inclusiveness, transparency, and credibility, particularly ahead of the 2027 general elections.
