Dr Brian Langrin is appointed governor of the Bank of Jamaica (BOJ), taking office on Wednesday, August 19, as the bank’s current governor, Richard Byles, completes his term. The government says the appointment is effective following the end of Byles’ tenure, which runs through Tuesday.

The Ministry of Finance and the Public Service announce that the selection follows a search process involving local and international candidates, made by the Governor-General in Council. Both outlets describe a search committee convened in April, chaired or convened under the finance ministry’s process and formalised through an assessment of candidates.

Langrin is presented as a seasoned economist with more than two decades of experience across central banking, financial stability, and multilateral development institutions, including prior senior roles linked to the BOJ and experience with an IMF-administered regional technical assistance centre. The finance minister emphasizes continuity and BOJ independence, while Langrin says he will focus on strengthening monetary and financial stability, improving resilience, and continuing financial-system modernisation.

One outlet also highlights the context of Byles’ period in office, including expanded statutory independence and steps such as inflation-targeting improvements and the introduction of JAM-DEX, while noting the variety of shocks the BOJ navigates. Another outlet frames the transition against ongoing economic uncertainty and continued efforts to keep inflation low through relatively tight monetary conditions.
