Flooding in Abuja is increasing, and Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), links the worsening conditions to changes around drainage areas and waterways. In interviews reported by multiple outlets, she says construction activities are taking place on green spaces, flood channels and flood plains, while gullies and other drainage paths are obstructed, reducing the city’s ability to carry away rainwater.

Kingibe argues that the problem predates the current FCT minister, but she says conditions have deteriorated significantly in recent years and were intensified during Nyesom Wike’s leadership. She also says she raised concerns with relevant FCT agencies and Development Control before the current situation, and she frames her complaints as aimed at protecting constituents rather than a personal dispute. Examples she cites include development near drainage or sewage lines in areas such as Wuse Zone 6, as well as the handling of gullies and green/public park spaces in parts of Asokoro and Jabi Park.

In terms of responses, the outlets report she calls for immediate actions such as clearing waste and unclogging drains before further rains, alongside longer-term repairs to sewage and drainage systems. She also urges oversight bodies, including the National Assembly, to examine the issue and press authorities for concrete short- and long-term plans.
