Nasdaq says it will expand its US stock trading schedule to nearly 23 hours a day starting 6 December, adding a new overnight session. The additional session would run from 9:00pm to 4:00am ET and would broaden opportunities to trade outside traditional US market hours.

The change is presented as a response to global demand for access to US equities and to competitive pressure from around-the-clock markets, including crypto and tokenised trading. Outlets also note that Nasdaq’s regular trading hours remain the primary reference point for price discovery, while the overnight window increases flexibility for investors in different time zones.

Reports agree that the launch depends on regulatory approval and that specific trading mechanics would change. Nasdaq would introduce a one-hour daily break for processing and transitions between trading dates, and overnight trading would use a separate market-data feed. Some order types are expected to be unavailable, and orders active when the overnight session ends would be cancelled and re-entered for the next session. Nasdaq also indicates that the nearly 23-hour schedule would apply to the Nasdaq Stock Market, while other Nasdaq venues would keep their existing hours.
