The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports announces India’s National Sports Awards for 2025, naming 17 sportspersons for the Arjuna Awards and additional recipients for other categories. The Arjuna Awards include athletes across disciplines such as athletics, badminton, chess, boxing, kabaddi, para-shooting, shooting, hockey and deaf shooting.
The list features athletes including Tejaswin Shankar, Divya Deshmukh, Treesa Jolly, Gayatri Gopichand, Vidit Gujarathi, and Narender Berwal, among others. Reports also note that no Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna awardee is named, and that this is the second consecutive year without a cricketer on the Arjuna list. One outlet adds that the awards follow a delayed announcement and a ministry re-evaluation process meant to ensure only selected names are honoured.
Across outlets, the selection process is described as being based on recommendations from a selection committee headed by Justice (Retd.) Arun Kumar Mishra, with awards also set for coaches under the Dronacharya category and for entities under the Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar. The Army Paralympic Node, Pune is identified as the recipient for the promotion award, while a coach and lifetime coach recipients are also named. The Arjuna Award is described as India’s second-highest sporting honour after the Khel Ratna.
