Researchers from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) report that 76% of Indo-Pacific coral reef sites are unlikely to grow quickly enough to keep pace with projected sea-level rise. The study indicates many reefs could effectively “drown” as seas rise faster than they can build upwards, under a high greenhouse gas emissions pathway.

The analysis focuses on the reef sites’ ability to track increasing water levels. NTU’s work suggests corals face a threshold: if sea level rise exceeds about 5.3 millimetres per year, most reefs surveyed do not have the capacity to match it. Both outlets describe the estimate as “three-quarters” of reef sites and highlight potential consequences for coastal protection and marine habitats.
