Tony Yuhuai Wu, a co-founder of Elon Musk’s AI lab xAI, is reportedly buying a large residential property in Hillsborough, California, for about US$70 million (around Rs. 670 crore). The mansion, described as Villa de Verano, covers 12 acres and is said to include six bedrooms and amenities such as a private nine-hole golf course, a 150-seat outdoor amphitheatre and a saltwater aquarium.
The reports say the purchase would rank among the most expensive residential sales in California this year, and they note that the deal draws attention on Chinese social media. Both outlets state that Wu has not publicly confirmed the transaction. Coverage also situates Wu within the broader profile of China-born researchers working in leading US AI companies.
Additional biographical context appears in one report: Wu holds a mathematics degree from the University of New Brunswick and a PhD in machine learning from the University of Toronto, completed in 2021. He worked with OpenAI and Google DeepMind before joining Google in 2021, became a founding member of xAI in 2023, and left xAI in February following SpaceX’s acquisition of the company.
