SEBI has proposed allowing NRIs and other eligible overseas investors to complete KYC and account onboarding digitally from their country of residence, without being physically present in India. Commenting on the move, Zerodha founder and CEO Nithin Kamath says the change could reduce delays and paperwork that currently slow overseas investors from accessing Indian markets.

SEBI’s consultation paper, “Review of Know Your Client Process for Individual Persons Resident Outside India,” outlines a relaxation for individual Persons Resident Outside India, including NRIs and OCIs, and foreign nationals living abroad in countries compliant with the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). Kamath notes that the current digital onboarding requirement creates friction for intermediaries, including the need to capture the client’s latitude and longitude in India, and that for investors abroad the process can require physical documentation and international courier services.

Across the outlets, both report that Kamath highlights the potential impact on NRI inflows. He describes onboarding as the remaining “massive bottleneck,” and argues that what can take weeks or months could be completed in days if e-signatures and digital processes are enabled from overseas. The proposal remains under consultation, with existing KYC rules expected to continue for investors in FATF non-compliant jurisdictions.
