LG Energy Solution begins operations at its new battery manufacturing facility in Lansing, Michigan, starting production at a plant the company says will support both energy storage systems (ESS) and electric vehicles (EVs). The company holds an opening ceremony on Tuesday local time, with U.S. and Michigan officials in attendance, including Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and U.S. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum.
The Lansing site is described as LG Energy Solution’s seventh production location in North America. The plant is set to produce lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries for ESS and nickel-cobalt-manganese batteries for EVs, with targeted capacity of more than 35 gigawatt-hours annually. LG Energy Solution says the new facility expands its ESS footprint, bringing the company to five ESS production sites across North America as demand grows for batteries used by AI data centers, power grids, and renewable energy projects.
Across outlets, the main emphasis is on the production start and the plant’s role in scaling North American battery supply. One outlet highlights the broader ESS network expansion and specific governmental participation at the opening, while another focuses on expected employment and alignment with U.S. domestic content goals.
