Dozens of children in Bihar fall ill after what authorities say was a preparation error involving detergent instead of salt in the school midday meal. NDTV reports that the salt and detergent powder are stored in the same kitchen area, and the cook allegedly adds detergent thinking it is salt.

The incident occurs at a government school in Nalanda district. The Hindu says the District Education Officer dismisses claims about negligence, while doctors describe it as a case of food poisoning and report the children’s conditions are stable. Times of India similarly states that about two dozen students are treated at Biharsharif Sadar Hospital and are reported to be out of danger.

Across reports, officials conduct an inquiry into how the detergent was used, but they differ on the interpretation of responsibility. All accounts agree on the scale of illness and that medical treatment is provided and children recover.
