Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison sues Texas Governor Greg Abbott to compel extradition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent Christian Castro to stand trial in Minnesota. Ellison says Castro faces Minnesota charges related to an alleged shooting, and that Texas has not completed the extradition process since Castro’s arrest in Texas in May.
PBS NewsHour reports Ellison says Abbott has not signed the extradition paperwork. The Independent similarly frames the lawsuit as an effort to force extradition. The New York Post adds that Ellison is seeking a temporary restraining order to prevent a Texas sheriff’s office from releasing Castro and to require Abbott to sign the extradition warrant so Minnesota can take custody.
The New Republic provides additional details of the underlying allegations, stating Minneapolis prosecutors charge Castro with assault and falsely reporting a crime. It says the case stems from a January 14 shooting of Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis and notes Castro was arrested in Cameron County, Texas, and is held under a time-limited detention period that could lead to release. Across outlets, Ellison argues Abbott is required to honor Minnesota’s request, while other officials indicate cooperation on the Minnesota side.
