The U.S. Department of Justice on Tuesday unseals new and updated charges against 17 individuals it says are involved in cyberattacks and data theft targeting U.S. universities, companies and government agencies, along with other institutions. The DOJ describes the case as part of a coordinated hacking campaign that it attributes to Iran.
According to the DOJ, the defendants work with the Mabna Institute, an Iran-based organization the government alleges conducts hacking campaigns on behalf of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and other Iranian government and university clients. One outlet characterizes the operation as a “massive” cyber theft campaign and notes the indictment includes multiple counts, while another focuses on the update and unsealing of specific charges and the alleged link between the hackers, Mabna Institute and Iranian state interests.
