LG Electronics says it is rolling out a next-generation 5G smart telematics system in European production vehicles. The company says it is based on the 3GPP Release 16 (R16) standard and is the first R16-based telematics system deployed in a mass-produced vehicle in Europe, with application to a European automaker’s production model.
LG says the R16 upgrade improves reliability and lowers delays compared with the earlier R15 standard, citing a data error rate of 0.001% and transmission latency of 1 millisecond. It adds that these metrics represent substantially better performance than 4G, including a claimed 100-fold reduction in data error rate and a five-fold reduction in transmission delays. The system is positioned to support software-defined vehicles and AI-enabled vehicle functions, including over-the-air updates, vehicle-to-everything communications, and high-volume data transfer for autonomous driving.
Across outlets, the core points are consistent: LG is manufacturing the R16-based telematics solution at scale and providing it to a premium European automaker. Coverage differs mainly in emphasis, with one source highlighting technical performance figures, while others focus more on the start of mass production and deliveries.
