Union Home Minister Amit Shah chairs the 31st meeting of the Southern Zonal Council in Tamil Nadu on Thursday. The government says the meeting takes place at Mamallapuram near Chennai on Aug 20, bringing together representatives from the southern states and Union Territories to discuss Centre–state issues.
The council functions as a forum to discuss disputes and coordination matters between the Union government and member governments. It includes Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Telangana, along with the Union Territories of Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep. The official release frames the meeting as a mechanism for resolving inter-governmental concerns through discussion.
Different outlets emphasize particular themes from the agenda. One report highlights the council’s role in dispute resolution and coordination, while another notes that the discussions cover subjects such as water sharing and infrastructure development, alongside broader Centre–state dialogue. The reports also say Shah is expected to arrive in Chennai the previous evening before proceeding to the meeting location.
