FCT Minister Nyesom Wike orders an immediate halt to using Abuja’s green areas, parks, and gardens as car dealership lots. The directive targets the conversion of recreational spaces into vehicle parking or sales areas, which Wike says harms environmental integrity.
Wike links the ban to the FCT Administration’s broader efforts to address flooding in Abuja. Outlets report that the move is part of ongoing responses after heavy rainfall led to severe flooding in parts of the city, including areas such as Wuse 2, Maitama, Durumi, Gaduwa, and Gudu. Several residents had blamed indiscriminate construction and blocked drainage channels.
According to reports, Wike also directs investigations into civil servants accused of granting illegal approvals for such land use. Relevant departments are reportedly summoned, and a task force is set up to enforce compliance and monitor unauthorized use. While outlets emphasize environmental and flood-management concerns, they also note that enforcement follows recent actions, including demolitions of structures built on waterways after the flooding.
