The U.S. Treasury is increasing the maximum size of its long-term bond liquidity-support buybacks. For the 10- to 30-year “sector,” the cap for buyback operations is rising from $2 billion to at least $4 billion, starting Sept. 9, according to reporting from Quartz and Bloomberg.
The Treasury’s plan applies to buybacks of longer-dated nominal coupon securities. Both outlets describe the change as part of the Treasury’s effort to boost market liquidity through larger per-operation buybacks, while keeping the operations within a defined maturity range. Bloomberg specifies that the increase takes effect Sept. 9, 2026, and frames it as a doubling of the maximum size for these liquidity support operations. Quartz reports the same cap increase beginning Sept. 9, though both pieces focus on the adjustment to the size limit rather than broader program changes.
